My Favorite Natural Hair Products

Since going natural in 2012, finding the right products for my hair has been a struggle because I have mixed textures and a scalp condition called Seborrhoeic Dermatitis. It’s similar to having dandruff but with inflammation and redness. The only solution I have for this is using medicated shampoos that my dermatologist prescribes. However, the medicated shampoos tend to strip my hair of its natural oils, causing it to be dry and brittle. So, I’ve been on the search for something to help combat the dryness, and I finally found the perfect combination.

SheaMoisture Manuka Honey & Mafura Oil Natural Hair Products

The SheaMoisture Manuka Honey & Mafura Oil Intensive Hydration Shampoo is the most moisturizing shampoo I have used this so far, and I’ve tried others. However, I always return to this because it cleanses my hair and scalp and still leaves my hair soft and moisturized. I like that it’s sulfate-free, paraben-free, cruelty-free, and although it’s no longer black-owned, it’s black-founded by individuals who understand black hair.

I had such great success with the shampoo; I decided to use the conditioner, deep conditioning mask, and twist-defining custard (which I’m sad to hear is discontinued) from the same line.

I love using the As I Am Leave-In Conditioner, but I find that mixing it with a bit of aloe vera juice, castor oil, grapeseed oil, and olive oil keeps my hair soft and moisturized.

My Wash Day Routine

Depending on the day and how flaky my scalp is from the Seborrhoeic Dermatitis, I start cleansing my scalp with the medicated shampoo. I let that sit in my scalp for 5 minutes.

Next, I shampoo with the SheaMoisture Manuka Honey shampoo, then conditioner to add back the moisture lost from the medicated shampoo. I let the conditioner sit in my hair under a plastic shower cap for 5-30 minutes when deep conditioning. After rising the conditioner out, I apply the leave-in mixture and twist with the SheaMoisture twist-defining custard. Since this is discontinued, I’ll use the As I Am DoubleButter Cream until I find something similar.

Styling

I mostly keep my natural hair in a high puff since it’s the style that suits me the most and is the easiest to maintain throughout the week. I re-apply the leave-in mixture every 2-3 days, retwist and apply a little oil to take it down. For my edges, I like to use the Design Essentials Natural Honey & Edge Tamer.

I hope this helps anyone who has similar scalp issues.

As always, live happily, healthily, and beautifully! — Syndie
